Resistive eating is a huge problem for many children with autism,
impacting on both the child and the rest of the family. As
it can be caused by several different things, no one approach will solve
it for everyone. It comes accompanied by huge amounts of
anxiety, both in the child and the parents, so tackling it needs to be
very carefully thought through otherwise things will just get worse. I have written a page on resistive eating, but below is a solution that used a child's special interest to motivate them to overcome the anxiety caused by an inability to generalise foods. We made food labels to go on portions of homemade food. The labels fitted over the lids of foil food containers, and were laminated so they could be wiped down and used again. The food could be cooked in big batches and stored in the freezer. |
